Floor

Floor, also known as the floor exercise is a 39x39ft spring floor that both female and male gymnasts compete on. While performing a floor exercise routine, gymnasts are expected to utilize the entirety of the apparatus. Deductions are given out when gymnasts step outside of the designated floor boundaries. Female gymnasts compete for 90-second routines to music, men compete for 70-second routines to no music. The music used must be instrumental, with no spoken words of any sort. If the judges hear any form of spoken or sung words in an athletes floor music, decoctions will be given out.

Floor routines are typically made up of various flips, spins, jumps/leaps and motions. Depending on the level of the athlete, there are requirements of what skills are can and cannot be placed in a floor routine. Routines can be choreographed at the athlete’s gym, by the athlete and their coach, or can be choreographed by a professional floor routine choreographer.

The elements of a floor routine are judged based on difficulty, execution, the inclusion of required skills, and an overall score of performance quality.
